Writing

At Cuddington, we are passionate about developing confident, creative, and motivated writers. To support this, we have introduced the Literacy Tree – a book-based writing programme that places high-quality children’s literature at the heart of our English curriculum.

Through this approach, children are immersed in rich and diverse stories that spark imagination and curiosity. Each unit is carefully designed to help pupils explore characters, settings, and themes through drama, discussion, and debate. These experiences not only deepen understanding but also encourage empathy and critical thinking.

Our writing lessons are purposeful and engaging. Children write for real audiences and meaningful purposes, with outcomes that are closely linked to key moments in the texts they study. Grammar and writing conventions are taught explicitly and embedded within the context of the story, helping children understand how and why these skills are used.

We know that children thrive when they are motivated. Literacy Tree supports this by:

  • Using high-quality books to inspire writing
  • Creating opportunities for drama and discussion to explore ideas
  • Encouraging children to write frequently and purposefully for a range of audiences

Our teachers are supported with excellent resources that build confidence in using creative techniques to bring writing to life. As a result, our pupils develop a strong sense of voice, purpose, and pride in their writing.

We are proud of the progress our children make as writers and the joy they find in expressing themselves through words.

When children leave Cuddington, we hope that they will be enthused, confident writers who:

  • can discuss and evaluate how authors use language, including figurative language, considering the impact on the reader
  • are able to write for a range of audiences and purposes using accurate grammatical features and a wide range of ambitious and effective vocabulary which draws on what they have read as models.
  • have a passion for writing, encouraging them to wish to write in their own time
  • understand the purpose of drafting, editing and publishing a piece of writing
